Although the carpet pile was thick and luxurious, Cullyn was steadily wearing a track in it as he paced up and down in his small office. His mind was a whirlpool of anxiety and his stomach was in a constant knot. Rheagan had informed him of his mind talk with Alys from the early hours of the morning, and more worryingly, the unknown presence butting at the edges of the conversation. Rheagan was adamant that he’d cut off the connection before it could be traced, but Cullyn still worried. He hadn’t heard from Gwyllim and had no way of knowing if the younglings had reached the small, well protected cottage at the edge of the forest far to the west of the city. All he could do was hope. He couldn’t risk checking if they were safe; there were too many dangers – what if Ardenna suddenly awoke, what if there was a Witch in the area? No, he had to continue to mask his Power, and not send out his consciousness to ensure they were safe. He took a calming breath, sent a small prayer to the Moon, and made his way out of his office.

The Government building had become slightly eerie following Ardenna’s collapse; officials were walking with their heads bowed and talking only in whispers – almost as if they thought that speaking in a normal voice might wake the Leader. There were also fewer people wandering the halls and corridors, preferring to lock themselves in their own offices and apartments. Maybe they were scared they would also be poisoned – the thought making Cullyn struggle to keep his face suitably sombre as he passed his colleagues. He reached Ardenna’s office and walked in, as though for the Moon, he should be there.

It was strange to be in the Leaders domain without her overbearing presence monitoring his every move. He glanced around, curiosity making him bolder than he any right to be. He padded around to her throne like chair and slid into it. Taking a breath through his nose, he skimmed his hand along the edge of the huge ornate table which dominated the room, making sure to keep his touch as light as air. After a few heartbeats, his fingers caught on a seam. His lips curved upwards into a small smile as he began to tap around the seam, and before long, a small compartment slid into his hand. His smile became wider, as he pocketed the contents and returned the secret drawer into its hiding place. Getting to his feet, he smoothed down the front of his robes, sidled out of the office and began to make his way to the infirmary.
